‘Maisha Ni M-PESA Tu’ is the new campaign Safaricom has launched to reward their customers and M-PESA Agents for using Safaricom mobile money. The new campaign is aimed at customers to encourage an increase in mobile money transactions.
The loyalty program works by rewarding each customer 10 points for every one hundred Kenya shillings spent on a transaction. The telecommunication company has included MPESA agents by rewarding them for every one hundred shillings deposited, with one point. The program will run from June 18th for ten weeks. Weekly prizes worth more than 300 million shillings are up for grabs for the lucky subscribers.

The loyalty points are rewarded for all transactions on M-PESA. This includes sending and receiving money, bank to M-PESA transactions and Lipa Na M-PESA transactions. This campaign will see seven of the 28.6 million Safaricom subscribers win apartments. Eight of the MPESA agents will also stand a chance to win 1 million shillings in cash. Those who participate will be able to redeem their points for data, voice calls, and SMS.
Increased Taxes
The loyalty program campaign comes in the wake of news that the excise duty on mobile money transactions will be increased from 10%-12%. The Minister for Treasury Henry Rotich confirmed the increment. Safaricom’s Chief Finance Officer Sateesh Kamath received the news by saying ‘the news laws would reverse the gains made in recent past through mobile led financial inclusion’.
